Dust

18 Jun 2010

"Would you be interested in synth-ing piano samples into... everything? I mean, replicate other instrumental sounds with synth-modified piano.
Someone goes up into a dusty old attic because they hear some odd noises. There's nothing there, just an old piano. Could it be that the piano made the noise? They take off the dust cover and sit down and start to play...
and they can't stop. They are forced by something they can't explain to play. The player grows weak from exhaustion, thin and tired, playing for hours and days and weeks and months. Eventually they succumb, and collapse... into dust."

FACTUAL INNACURACIES: the keys of this piano are actually made of wood.
Also: it doesn't kill people. To the best of my knowledge.

This track is a part of Volume 3 of Music for the Blind, which is currently incomplete.

Lyrics

it's out of tune
it's old
it's dusty
but still demands attention

i am drawn to it
i lift the lid
i sit down
and i begin to play

this piano is employing me
my fingers entertain
as hours pass
it echoes round my brain

----

time slips away
and i am lost
the puppet falls

----

the piano is commanding me what is it about dust and ivory
my fingers feel the strain
as days go by why am i so mesmerised
i try to stop in vain

----

this piano is destroying me taken forcefully this dust and ivory
my fingers fall apart
and now i know there's no escape will not let me go
i crumble

the deed is done
the piano has its victim
i am dust
the lid is closed
and everything is as it was
but me
